Designing Human Connection
Holding Space was a creative direction proposal developed for We Need To Talk with Paul C. Brunson, exploring how the show's philosophy of connection and conversation could evolve into a scalable cultural brand spanning live events, physical products and community experiences. Developed in collaboration with Flight Story, Steven Bartlett's media company.
Rather than beginning with aesthetics, the project started by identifying a broader cultural tension. in a world of constant communication, genuine human connection increasingly feels rare. This became the foundation for a strategic brand world designed to reinterpret the mechanics of digital culture into intentional real-world connection.
The outcome was a complete creative direction system built around the WARM Framework, four interconnected pillars defining how the brand should feel, behave, communicate and show up visually. Audience research with participants closely aligned to Holding Space's target demographic informed everything from environmental design and participation systems to tone of voice and visual identity.
At the heart of the direction was the concept of Suspended Emotional Expression, a visual territory inspired by anticipation, emotional honesty and the unfinished nature of meaningful conversation, spanning typography, photography, layout systems, brand codes, event experiences and content frameworks.
